Serving Blacktown for over 54 years

About Us

Alpha Books Company has a long history in the Blacktown area. The business was started by Mr J.Vandernoord, a Dutch migrant who settled in Blacktown after World War II and started supplying books to other Dutch migrants in their own language. Mr Vandernoord worked hard, making his deliveries on Saturdays on a bicycle. The enterprise grew to include the supply of educational books, and Vandernoord’s Bookshop opened in 1961. The first shop was in a back room, upstairs on Main Street, Blacktown.

In 1970 Blacktown TAFE commenced operations, and Vandernoord’s Bookshop commenced selling TAFE texts on campus.  The bookshop has had a continuous presence on the Blacktown TAFE campus, to this day.

When the time came for him to retire, Mr Vandernoord sold the business to his son Rob, who further developed it to incorporate all educational texts, including TAFE texts. The business moved location to Station Arcade on Main Street, Blacktown in 1986.

In 1988, Mr Rob Vandernoord sold the business to his friend Mr Wol Rutgers, who continued the traditions which were put in place by the Vandernoords.  After 30 years, in 1991, the Vandernoords book shop changed its name to Alpha Books Company Pty Ltd, and focused on servicing the students and the local community with all educational texts, including TAFE resources.

Mr Wol Rutgers further developed the business to its current premises at Blacktown and Mt Druitt TAFE with the assistance of his wife, Mrs Michelle Rutgers.

End of 2013, after 25 years in business, Wol and Michelle Rutgers decided to take a well-earned retirement.

Alpha Books Company is a business committed to providing quality educational resources and excellent customer service. We intend on continuing the long history and relationship with the local community and beyond, inspiring young people for lifelong learning.
